Cyber Stalking

Cyberstalking can happen to anyone at anytime through any social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest , linkedln , Flickr , and Google +. Cyberstalking as defined by Wikipedia ,"is the use of the Internet or other electronic means to stalk or harass an individual, a group, or an organization.[1] It may include false accusations, defamation, slander and libel. It may also include monitoring, identity theft, threats, vandalism, solicitation for sex, or gathering information that may be used to threaten or harass."With the advent of smart phones the crime of cyberstalking has crossed over into the real world with real-time stalking.

Twitter is the most obvious of the social sites to cyberstalk someone. The use of smart phones and tablets have increased the ability to stalk a person or group of people.Twitter has had a plethora of  different cyber stalkers who circumvent the "block" feature of the social site. This gives no security or assurance that the stalker will stay away ( on twitter or in real life).

Facebook is a social site where people can covertly stalk and never let the one being stalked know they are being followed by the stalker at that time.Unlike Twitter, Facebook is not used for the sole purpose of informing the populous of real time events. Facebook stalking is a much more passive approach to cyberstalking .

Google + is another site that has a slightly different cyber stalker. The usual goal of a cyber stalker on google + is to access your bank accounts and other financial information. This is more of a con game than a stalker because the goal is not sociologically motivated, but greed orientated.

Flickr stalkers are more of an audience of viewers who follow different videos and pictures uploaded by different users. The stalking in Flickr is more acceptable to society than the previously stated forms of social media because the content is meant to be viewed anonymously without having to ever register any personal information.

Pinterest is probably the least intrusive of the social media sites. This site is used to upload pictures of different interests to the viewer. The site asks what you are interested in and then uses an alga-rhythm to suggest different pictures you would be interested in viewing. the suggestions come directly into your e-mail for selection.

  1. The topic you chose is great - I am interested to learn more about which sites are most vulnerable to hacking, stalking, etc. In the 4th paragraph you say ".... greed orientated"; perhaps you could say "economically oriented" to stay in the same vein as the word "sociological." Also, in the last paragraph you misspelled the word "algorithm." Another thing I would suggest is looking into dating sites like OKCupid and Tinder. They have great examples of monitoring, threats, solicitation for sex, and harassment. I don't know how many websites you intend to focus on for your final draft, but I would suggest whittling it down to 3 or less so that you can focus more in depth on each one.

  2. I think your topic is very interesting. I honestly didn't think about which sites were more vulnerable to cyber stalkers than others. I think you should talk about incidents that have occurred on these sites & if the sites are doing anything about it.

  3. I think the topic you chose will make for an interesting essay. It is great that you include the different ways that people can stalk you such as covert and anonymously. It would probably be good not to include Pinterest and Google + because they do not seem to have much relation to your topic.
